Wine, nature, historical heritage and truffle hunting: welcome to Somontano

With the month of November begins the season of the truffle. A great opportunity to put the spotlight on the region of Somontano, famous for its wine and for this absolutely gourmet and fashionable product. The black truffle hunt is a great experience not to be missed during your stay in the region, until March, which marks the end of the season.

The unique combination of climate, soil and winemakers’ knowledge of the area made it an excellent site for the vine cultivation and winemaking. Somontano Designation of Origin is potentially one of Spain’s most exciting wine regions.

Here you will come across with innovative producers that have a fine, juicily vinified Tempranillo or a surprisingly delicate Gewürztraminer. Although the majority of the styles will be some fine reds and whites from imported grape varieties (Syrah, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc, etc.), you will still find the wines made from the region’s own grapes Moristel, Parraleta and Alcañón in small quantities. 

The connection between rivers and their streams and people dates back to prehistoric times. The medieval villa of Alquézar is an example of how people have adapted to their beautiful yet particular surroundings, all the while respecting nature and history. This 9th-century village has been declared an Area of Artistic and Historical significance and offers us the possibility of reliving the ancient medieval times gone past. The Collegiate Church and medieval village overlook the Vero River, a rare enclave of wild beauty where you will listen to old legends about maids, kings and moors… 

A visit to Barbastro, whose history is projected on the walls of its wineries, can submerge us into the local lifestyle and delight us with all of its gastronomic and winemaking might. This capital of Somontano, often referred as a «wine capital» of the region is located in a privileged environment that has traditionally been a meeting point,  the crossroad of the Pyrenean valleys, an exchange hub for the Somontano area inhabitants and the neighboring regions.
